Inspect Your HVAC After a Storm
20
September

By Fahrenheit AC /

We are in the peak of hurricane season and still experiencing high summer temperatures. Losing power and being without air conditioning can be irritating with the summer temperatures. There are ways you can check your air conditioning system after a hurricane.

Some things you can do after a hurricane is to reset it and to assess the damage.

Here is how to reset your air conditioner after a power outage:

  • Turn the system off at the thermostat. This stops the thermostat from cooling until you have been able to reset both the external and internal breakers.
  • Flip the breaker for the AC to the “off” position.
  • Flip the breaker back on.
  • Wait about 30 minutes. In these 30 minutes, your air conditioner will reset. During this time, make sure the thermostat is in the “off” position. After the 30 minutes are up, turn the thermostat to “cool” and the AC system will turn back on.

After a storm, when it is safe to do so, you will want to assess the damage.

Check for damage from fallen trees or other debris.

Waters from storms carry a large amount of debris and particles which can work their way into the bearings in motors, clog coils, and can create problems that may not immediately occur but can cause future catastrophic damage to your system. An inspection from your AC professional can help you in assessing damage from debris.

You also want to check to see if there is any damage from flooding.

While most outdoor units are designed to handle things like rain, wind, cold, and heat, they are not designed to be immersed in water. You can tell if it has been submerged in water from a water mark left by the dirt in the water. If you see this, you should have a professional inspect it.

You will also want to make sure there is no electrical smoke damage and that the refrigerant and electrical lines are in tact.

Since some of the post-storm issues may not arise until years later, it’s always a good idea to have a professional inspect your system even if it doesn’t look like there is damage.
